RSD13-RSDX, themed “Rivers of Conversations,” provides a unique platform for exploring systemic design in an online setting. Hosted on Zoom Events, the symposium offers rich opportunities for engagement and learning, with content flowing through community-led discussions and interactive sessions. Here’s what to expect and how to make the most of the experience.
The agenda at RSD13-RSDX offers a full day of sessions from October 12 to 21, but time management is essential. Good news! Zoom Events includes a DIY itinerary, so it’s easy to bookmark and export sessions that align with your interests into your calendar. Live participation is where the real engagement happens. Many sessions are designed for active involvement, especially discovery, discussion, or experiential formats. They often evolve organically without a formal Q&A structure. Presenters guide these conversations, but participant input directs the course of the discussion. For those who prefer to stay active, walking while listening to sessions can be an effective way to stay engaged. Plug in your headphones and take the symposium on the go. This approach works well for presentation-oriented sessions but may require staying in one place for more interactive discussions to fully engage.
When you are available for listening but not active chat engagement you can stay focused by muting notifications. In Zoom, this can be done by clicking on the chat panel, selecting the three-dot menu in the upper right corner, and choosing “Mute Notifications.” Additionally, it’s a good practice to inform moderators by sending a brief message to the moderators via chat to let them know you’re primarily listening and not actively engaging. For instance, you could write, “Hi, I’m here to listen and absorb the discussion but will not be participating actively in the chat.” This way, moderators can help manage expectations and ensure your participation is noted appropriately.
The Zoom chat will be bustling with activity. Without formal networking events, the chat becomes the main avenue for interaction. It’s where discussions unfold, ideas are shared, and connections are made. Thoughtful use of the chat—whether through quick comments, relevant insights, and reactions like thumbs up—keeps the conversations flowing, engaging, and organised. Moderators help keep discussions focused and productive by framing and directing questions to the moderators at the right time. Zoom chat offers numerous opportunities for connection. Sharing resources, suggesting follow-up conversations, or connecting on LinkedIn after engaging in discussions can lead to meaningful professional relationships and collaborations.
RSD13-RSDX aims to combine intellectual exploration with interactive engagement. By managing your schedule, using the chat thoughtfully, and finding ways to integrate participation into daily life, you can navigate the symposium with ease. Expect a dynamic, engaging experience where the flow of conversations and connections contributes to new insights and ideas.
