In today’s complex and rapidly changing world, integrating multiple disciplines has become essential to address complex challenges in climate, healthcare, energy, and advanced technologies, to name a few. Existing crises demand a critical understanding that is leveraged with timely, high-quality, and available data that can assist in creating more targeted responses, foresee future needs, and improve the design of urgently needed initiatives (United Nations, 2022).

For example, the field of design has been endeavouring to transform its practice in recognition of the above situation. One of the avenues of this design transformation has been systemic design, which has embedded systems thinking paradigms into design. Systemic design has contributed to the consideration of the interconnections between socio-technical, natural, political, and economic systems and the development of alternative ways of thinking and acting across previously fragmented domains (Landa-Avila et al., 2022). Despite the progress ignited by systemic design, more is needed to relate other fields as it has been stressed that transdisciplinary approaches, which integrate different disciplines, non-academic ways of knowing and experiential knowledge, can address highly contested challenges (van der Bijl-Brouwer, 2022).
