Unveiling Hidden Connections Between Ecology, Social Systems, and Urban Futures
This paper presents a comprehensive mapping of interconnectivities between natural ecology, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and urban ecology, culminating in a predictive relational metrics matrix. By structuring the complex interplay among the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and cryosphere, the study visualises their direct and indirect contributions to SDG attainment and urban system development. Through a data-driven approach, this mapping framework enhances decision-making in sustainable urban planning, resilience strategies, and environmental policy implementation. The framework is demonstrated through a graphical exhibit illustrating the connections among biophysical systems, urban infrastructure, and socio-economic conditions. The colour-coded and thickness-varied edges in the visualisations not only enhance the interpretability of these relationships but also allow for quick identification of the most impactful factors within the system. By employing predictive modelling, we have demonstrated how emerging trends and dependencies can inform future urban policies, guiding interventions that enhance resilience and sustainability. This mapping framework not only reinforces the interconnected nature of urban and ecological systems but also highlights the need for a more holistic approach to urban design and policy implementation—one that embraces the complexities of socio-ecological dynamics. Through this approach, we aim to foster more resilient, adaptive urban environments that align with global sustainability goals.
