Reviewers

RSD papers are single-anonymised reviewed; however, the RSD12 Scientific Committee encouraged all authors to participate in selective transparency peer reviewing, creating a virtuous review circle across all contributors. In the first phase, all reviews are done anonymously to avoid conflicts of interest and reduce bias. However, if either the author or the reviewer can request an open review phase, which opens up a collaborative review to enhance the quality of the manuscript or resolve specific issues, they can request to initiate the open peer review phase. This phase proceeds only if both parties agree, ensuring the collaborative discussion is mutually consensual.

There were 220 submissions, and 369 reviews were provided by 139 reviewers. The Programme Committee accepted 135 papers (61% acceptance rate). SDA adheres to the model of a scholars spiral:

Thinking of scholarship in terms of a cyclic, spiral process supports a vital emergence of supportive opportunities for scholars. The SDA desires to encourage young researchers, graduate students, and new RSD authors to pursue their own best pathways to publishing available within the RSDA community, from conference to journal and, as envisioned, other publishing outlets for non-research and case studies. —Navigating the Scholars Spiral

Therefore, efforts are made to provide constructive feedback to the authors of all submitted articles. RSD12 reviewers collectively wrote 97,797 words, an average of 377 words per review, adjusted to remove meta-reviews by PC members, which are directed toward specific aspects of the review and, therefore, shorter. Within the average, there was a great deal of disparity; the longest review was 3,129 words, and the shortest review was 39 words. This variance likely speaks to the differences in understanding and expectations, and to support greater alignment across RSD reviewers, Cheryl May organised two sessions on reviewing, facilitated by Ryan J.A. Murphy. Reviewing Reviewing article and session videos

Publishing with RSD

Proceedings of Relating Systems Thinking and Design are published online and include the contributions for each format.

Papers and presentations are entered into a single-blind peer-review process, meaning reviewers see the authors’ names but not vice versa. Reviewers consider the quality of the proposed contribution and whether it addresses topics of interest or raises relevant issues in systemic design. The review process provides feedback and possible suggestions for modifications.

The Organising Committee reviews and assesses workshops and systems maps & exhibits with input from reviewers and the Programme Committee.

The Scholars Spiral

In 2022, the Systemic Design Association adopted the scholars spiral—a cyclic non-hierarchical approach to advance scholarship—and in 2023, launched Contexts—The Systemic Design Journal. Together, the RSD symposia and Contexts support the vital emergence of supportive opportunities for scholars and practitioners to publish work in the interdisciplinary field of systemic design.

The Systemic Design Association's membership ethos is to co-create the socialization and support for all members to contribute their work, find feedback and collaboration where needed, and pursue their pathways toward research and practice outcomes that naturally build a vital design field for the future.
