Industrieel Ontwerpen (IO)

TU Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering is one of the world’s leading design schools and a second home to over 2,000 students and 350 researchers. Referred to as IO in local jargon, which is short for its Dutch name Industrieel Ontwerpen, our faculty acts as the bridge between advancements in technology and the needs of people, organisations and society.

IO has celebrated its 50th birthday in 2019. What started in the 1960s as a modest program with a few lecturers and two students, has grown into a faculty that trains purpose-driven designers with strong links to businesses, public bodies and NGOs, as well as its alumni, who bring their design skills to a wide range of sectors and disciplines on a daily basis.

About TU Delft

TU Delft is the largest and oldest technical universities in the Netherlands. With eight faculties and numerous research institutes, TU Delft is where world-class education and research go hand-in-hand to take on global challenges and create impact.

But there is so much more than academic life to TU Delft. Our pedestrian and bike-friendly campus, which is a stone’s throw away from the historic city centre of Delft, is a buzzing hotspot for over 27.000 people every day who share a passion for science, design and technology. TUDelft’s world-famous library designed by alumni, the botanical gardens with thousands of plant species, the sustainability fieldlab Green VIllage, the Robovalley or incubator YES! Delft is just a few of those many points that spark curiosity on our campus.

Planning to be on-campus? Welcome to the City of Delft

Delft is a historic city located in the southwest of the Netherlands with a population of around 100.000. Its picturesque canals, well preserved 17th-century architecture and cute cafes make it very difficult not to fall in love with Delft at first sight.

The city is internationally famous for its long-standing tradition of handmade tin-glazed pottery known as Delftware. Delft has been home to well-known artists and scientists including Johannes Vermeer, the painter of ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek, who is known to be the father of microbiology.

Delft is connected very well to the rest of the country both by car and by public transportation. There is a direct train connection between Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Delft every 30 minutes. Larger cities such as Rotterdam and Den Haag are just short train (or bike) ride away.
