Responsibility in design and systems thinking connects through dialogue. This workshop aims to generate dialogue about the scope and meaning of responsible design education and its implications for educational institutions and disciplines. The context for the workshop is the many urgent global challenges we face related to sustainability, inclusion, marginalisation, peace, and corporate social responsibility.
The workshop’s content is framed by Fayolle and Gailly’s teaching model, asking the Why? For whom? For which results? What? How? of responsible design. Workshop participants engage in two activities. First, a card sort to identify themes around responsible design education by discussing, coding, and clustering quotes/paraphrases. Second, a poster activity reflecting on how social accountability towards users, groups, and the planet is integrated across student, course, program, and institution levels at their schools. The workshop wraps up with a plenary strategic conversation to share insights about where we are, where we want to be, what we can do, and how we can make it happen.
The goal is for participants to gain awareness of the importance of integrating ethics, responsibility, and dialogue into design education to tackle complex socio-ecological challenges. We explore the scope, content, and pedagogical approaches required while acknowledging tensions and complexities. Participants can then apply these insights to engage in responsible design discourses in their research.
