Understanding and balancing polarities within educational ecosystems in times of transition

“No one knows what the future will hold” applies now more than ever, making educational (re)design an even more intense and complex process. The common approach of a small task force redesigning the curriculum in a linear approach is unease with the wicked nature of today’s educational transitions. Also, it overlooks the (tacit) knowledge of the collective of educators, students and other stakeholders. We believe that educational transformation requires a more participatory, holistic and iterative approach. By involving many stakeholders, this collective knowledge can be unleashed to create better educational programs that are broadly supported. This approach aptly can be characterized as an ‘expedition’, an innovation strategy of Williams & Parr (2004, modified by Coppoolse, 2018).

The question is: How to codesign innovative educational programs and curricula involving many stakeholders? It must be acknowledged that a priori, not everyone is in favour of change, as change may impact their individual stakes (e.g., their job!).

In this workshop, the participants explore the possible polarities arising when co-designing educational change. Together we design interventions that help counter the main behavioural tendencies of participants in their co-design project. The participants experience the value of the interventions that proved to be successful for navigating polarities, focused on artistically expressing the (inner) journey while co-designing. This entails constructing the “island of innovation.”
