The isolation of Pennsylvania’s elderly, driven by the exodus of younger generations following the steel industry’s collapse and worsened by infrastructure that is not adequately set up for an ageing population, is exacerbating mental and physical health issues, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to support and connect seniors.

Isolation of the elderly in Pennsylvania is a growing issue, rooted in both historical and current demographic trends. The collapse of Pittsburgh’s prominent steel industry in the 1980s led to a population shift, as younger adults left in search of better opportunities, leaving behind an aging population with weakened social support. Compounded by Pennsylvania’s rising number of Residents aged 60 and over, PA will soon see seniors outnumbering those under 20, straining already limited resources. This isolation impacts not only mental health, leading to increased rates of depression and anxiety, but also physical health, with loneliness linked to chronic illness and cognitive decline. The combination of an aging population, loss of younger generations and workforces, and inadequate infrastructure creates many opportunity spaces for interv- entions to reduce elderly isolation and loneliness.
