Report: the project for systems and for complexity in the teaching of design ISIA Rome as a distinctive design thought in the Third Mission and Social Change
The presentation aims to clarify the role that a broader vision such as the one intrinsic to systems design (i.e. the design action modelled on systemic thinking and complexity) has favoured and continues to provide to ISIA of Rome (from its foundation as the Advanced Course in Industrial Design and Visual Communication to today as an Afam institution BA and MA in Systemic Design for Services and Products and for Communication, 1965-2005) to emerge in the Third Mission in a distinctive and identifying way in the design approach for Social Change.
The presentation traces the historical legacy of a project teaching that since its beginnings in the academic year 1965-66 declares that Design Education is to be understood as Design that gives Form to Action, or rather operates by activating relationships of involvement, only these can be considered as incisive for the improvement of society or then a transformation of reality towards a collaborative dimension: “Purpose: Participation of the users. Tool: alternative client. Teaching Methodology: design for systems, group, interdisciplinary.” (1977, Pp 20; Van Onck, 1973).
The design of ISIARoma systems currently operates on systemic relationships (maps and diagrams to manage flows of I, II, III level relationships between complementary areas in the system) intending the collective actions that the system promotes as good relational practices, the priority dimension of the project itself.
