Complex transportation systems are increasingly difficult for travellers to navigate: a holistic, traveller-oriented approach across full journeys remains unfulfilled. The airport experience, dynamic and interdependent by nature, calls for a perspective that emphasises relationality and empowerment. In this workshop, participants explore possibilities to create an empowering, integrated airport experience. Through co-design and participatory approaches, the facilitators invite participants to share experiences and values in interacting with complex systems such as airport transfers; understand and apply an empowerment framework to the travelling experience to reflect on the importance of interconnection when travelling. Participants engage in creative activities focusing on four key exploratory elements: 1) what travellers need to feel empowered in complex travel experiences; 2) values sought after for empowerment in transportation; 3) how relationality and interconnection may play a role. This workshop aims to develop design criteria to empower travellers during airport transfers, considering diverse cultural backgrounds and technology access levels. This workshop aims to build a collective understanding of travel experiences and explore the importance of autonomy and interconnection in complex journeys. We co-develop design criteria with participants to enhance travel experiences and create an empowerment toolkit. Our goal is to provide designers and researchers with a framework for designing complex product-service ecosystems in travel that promote relationality and empower travellers.
