Introducing Holon Analytics

This paper introduces the concept of Holon Analytics as a methodology for combining systems analysis, systems design, and strategic foresight. After providing a brief background, the paper aims to explain this new tool, starting with a summary of the concept of a holon, which refers to understanding a focal system as both a system of parts (sub-systems) and as part of a larger system (super-system). The paper then outlines the foundational approach of Holon Analytics, explaining its analytical process, which consists of two distinct phases: Holon Analytics 1.0 and Holon Analytics 2.0. Each phase is visualised using a different metaphor to illustrate the specific task at hand, and the process is arranged into a sequence of steps accessible to the user.

The first phase of Holon Analytics 1.0 starts with an outside-in analysis from the current-day perspective of the focal system’s performance and goal attainment. This phase focuses on understanding the relationships among the system’s constituent parts (endo-structure) as expressed by the degree of congruent behaviour. A metaphorical framework is used to map and visualise these relationships, providing insights into the system’s efficiency and alignment with its goals. Additionally, this phase considers improvements to the relationships and their impact on the system’s properties, offering a pathway for intentional changes (systems design).

The second phase of Holon Analytics 2.0 introduces a different metaphor to discuss the future resilience of the system-as-a-whole from an inside-out lens. This phase incorporates perspectives from strategic foresight, focusing on improving the system’s resilience in its embeddedness (exo-structure). While Holon Analytics 1.0 takes a more static view, Holon Analytics 2.0 invites a dynamic, process-oriented approach to the future performance of the system and its evolution (systemic design). The goal here is to enhance the system’s effectiveness in relation to its future performance and trajectory.

The paper subsequently presents initial experiences and insights gained from applying Holon Analytics. These early findings offer valuable feedback on how the methodology functions in practice. The paper concludes with a brief review of the findings and outlines potential areas for further study and the development of the concept. Future research could deepen the understanding and application of Holon Analytics in diverse systems and contexts.
