Future Education and Literacies for Designers: Reflections on Systemic Design Pedagogies

Format: Papers, RSD12, RSD12 Papers Pre-release

Palak Dudani and Karianne Rygh
The complexities of 21st Century needs designers who can anticipate, enact and propose ways for shaping alternative futures by design. FUEL4DESIGN, a three year Erasmus + project developed Design Futures Literacies, exemplifying the pedagogical necessity to capacity build towards designing for futures which are increasingly complex, uncertain and in-flux.

Design Futures Literacies is defined as “transdisciplinary mix of theories and concepts, methods and practices geared to support situated and resilient pedagogies. This is for design students and teachers to engage productively and critically with the given and changing contexts and conditions of Design. Going beyond functionalism and into the pragmatic and the imaginary, it aims to meet real world needs, reaching beyond their constraints and conceptualisations to develop and sustain specifically design based literacies and competencies. These are mental, material, creative and critical skills that are enacted performatively. In doing so, we need to acknowledge and address the changing nature of futures where the temporal and spatial, social and political, economic and ethical are increasingly entwined.”

FUEL4DESIGN is a collaborative project with four European universities with leading design and research experts. This presentation will share project outcomes, highlight examples of open-access practical tools, and reflections on implication for systemic design pedagogies.
