Peter Hayward Jones and Kristel Van Ael
Since Jones and Van Ael published the book Design Journeys through Complex Systems new systemic design tools have been developed for complex activity modelling, organisational development, and strategy making. The book’s systemic design methodology provides a number of methods that support organisational design and management, which are considered a necessary complement to designing systems “external” to companies and institutions. Any organisation is a social system and can be designed for its own self-organising to meet the demands of complex missions. Related workshops have revealed an increasing interest in systemic design approaches to support leadership and complex management decisions. Experimental tools and methods have been trialled in design leadership workshops, and due to the lack of focus on this emerging area at RSD Symposia, the authors believed this to be a potential area of underserved but generally applicable interest among practitioners.
In the Design Journeys session, the co-authors focus on assessing prototype canvases and gaining working feedback on new tool designs. They provide a training overview and facilitate the exploration of several of the new tools in a context designed to simulate organisational functions. The Design Journeys methodology is applied to creative organisational activities, including evolutionary service innovation, system value proposition, and system change roadmapping.

Peter Jones is an SDA co-founder and professes the discipline at OCAD University, Toronto, where he teaches in the Strategic Foresight and Innovation and the Design for Health graduate programs. Peter leads systemic design research in new economies, healthcare, media, community governance, social systems and policy design through collaboration in international networks. Since 2001, Peter has led the strategic innovation consultancy Redesign Network. He connects research and practice through founding commitments with the Flourishing Enterprise Institute, Drawdown Toronto, Bounce Beyond, the Agoras Institute, and OCAD’s Strategic Innovation Lab. Peter is convening the 12th year of Design with Dialogue, a community of practice to educate and socialize creative facilitation of dialogues for transformation. Kristel Van Ael’s background is in industrial product development. She is one of the managing partners at Namahn, and her main focus is strategic design and knowledge development. At Namahn, Kristel constantly develops new methods and tools. She is the lead author of the service design toolkit (www.servicedesigntoolkit.org) and systemic design toolkit (www.systemicdesigntoolkit.org). For the latter, she collaborates with Philippe Vandenbroeck of shiftN, Alex Ryan of the MaRS Solutions Lab (Toronto) and Peter Jones who manages the international Systemic Design Association. She’s also the co-author of the Design Journeys through Complex Systems.
Kristel is also a co-teacher in product-service-system design and lead-teacher in systemic design at the Antwerp University (UA – product development). Kristel is hooked by systemic design and believes that designers can and should contribute to systemic change by understanding how everything is interrelated and how products can be designed and deployed as leverages towards a better future.
Outside the world of design, Kristel is very interested in graphic novels such as Maus (Art Spiegelman), Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi) or Buddha (Osamu Tezuka) and loves spending her Sunday afternoons reading them.
