This paper presents a case of use of the 5-Principle Systemic Design Methodology (5PSDM) to address the problem of the considerable amount of waste generated by the growing consumption of green coconut water in the tourist region of Belo Horizonte. This area, called Pampulha, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, in the Cultural Landscape category for its important collection of modern architectural and landscape works. The aim of this article is to demonstrate the potential of the methodology in dealing with complex matters describing the main aspects of the approach used. Adding value estimates to the flowchart modelling of the system increases the potential of the project to be implemented, showing qualitative and quantitative impacts of the context and of the proposals. Other design tools used to understand the system and develop proposals are also described. It also addresses the involvement of stakeholders from the academy, local administration, businesses, society and the environment, as the project affects the efficiency of local government services; tourist attractiveness; the role of citizens; the engagement of coconut sellers. The work concludes by exposing the benefits of the 5PSDM and arguing that the approach of the project presented has the potential to form the basis of effective solutions in similar contexts.
